National Depression Screening Day - October 4
The mission of this National Depression screening day is to educate people about clinical depression, offer them a confidential way to be screened for symptoms of the illness, and direct individuals toward appropriate professional help if necessary. Depression screenings are offered each year in community settings since clinical depression is a serious medical illness that can lead to suicide. Mental Health America, as part of the Campaign for America's Mental Health, has developed a depression screening website where depression screenings can also be done online. To take part in a depression screening, go to www.depression-screening.org. A Lunch & Learn topic related to depression is available. Please refer to topic 41 in your Lunch & Learn booklet.

Liver Awareness Month
The liver, one of the body's largest organs, performs hundreds of daily functions. One in ten Americans are affected by a form of liver, biliary, or gallbladder disease. Over 16,000 people are waiting for a liver transplant in the United States. Good liver health maintains the overall function of the body. A few ways to promote good liver health are: avoid taking unnecessary medications, never mix alcohol with other drugs and medications, use aerosol cleaners or sprays in a well-ventilated room, reduce the amount of fried and fatty foods consumed because the risk of gallbladder disorders (a liver disease) increases. For 50 ways to love your liver, go to www.liverfoundation.org. Consider organ donation the next time you renew your driver's license. You could save someone's life! Lunch & Learn topics related to liver health are available. Please refer to topics 3 & 13 in your Lunch & Learn booklet.

Lupus Awareness Month
In 2006, the Lupus Foundation of America provided one million dollars to support lupus research projects at research institutions throughout the United States. There are dedicated scientists looking for ways to find a cure for lupus as well as making it easier to live with this disease. Those with lupus face the threat of a flare up, everyday fatigue, and pain which compounds daily life. Simple energy boosters during the day can help. Schedule a ten minute relaxation break. Keep a few nutritious snacks on hand for an energy boost such as low-fat yogurt, a handful of nuts, or a protein bar. Drink lots of water. Walk up a flight of stairs to get your heart pumping. For more information on lupus, visit www.lupus.org. A Lunch & Learn topic related to lupus is available. Please refer to topic 10 in your Lunch & Learn booklet.
